## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ SAID THAT WHEN HE WAS AT 13,000 FEET HEADED TO HIS DESTINATION HE NOTICED THAT A SHINY OBJECT SEEMED TO FLY FROM THE PROPELLER ARC AND THAT A HUGE VIBRATION FOLLOWED THAT. HE THEN SAW THAT THE PROPELLER ARC WAS NOT SMOOTH AND HE THOUGHT RIGHT AWAY THAT A PART OF THE PROPELLER BROKE OFF. HE SELECTED IDLE POWER IMMEDIATELY AND BEGAN TO LOOK FOR A PLACE TO SET DOWN. HE LANDED IN A SMOOTH PLACE AND AVOIDED HITTING THE LARGE ROCKS BUT DID HIT ONE AND STOPPED AFTER A SHORT DISTANCE. HE HIT HIS HEAD ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SINCE HE DID NOT HAVE ANY SHOULDER HARNESS INSTALLED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR14LA377](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR14LA377), Sep 15, 2014: Piper PA 28 (N5948W), Lone Pine, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The fatigue failure of a propeller blade due to a propeller strike by/of an unidentified object at an unknown time.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
