## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING LANDING AT HILTON HEAD AIRPORT (HXD) AT NIGHT, THE PILOT COULD NOT GET THE AIRPORT LIGHTING TO COME ON. HE THOUGHT HE HAD A GOOD VIEW OF THE AIRPORT AND DECIDED TO LAND. THE AIRCRAFT ACTUALLY LANDED IN THE GRASS BETWEEN THE TAXIWAY AND RUNWAY. ON ROLL OUT THE AIRCRAFT CONTACTED A DRAINAGE PIPE AND AIRPORT SIGN. THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING COLLAPSED AND THE LEFT WING WAS COMPROMISED FROM THE LEADING EDGE THROUGH THE MAIN SPAR ABOUT MID SPAN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA15CA065](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA15CA065), Nov 26, 2014: Socata TB 20 Trinidad (N85AV), Hilton Head Island, SC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadvertent selection of an incorrect frequency, which resulted in his inability to activate the airport lighting, and his subsequent decision to continue the approach in dark night…

## Other reports on N85AV (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19920906042659I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19920906042659I), Sep 6, 1992: Socata TB20TRINIDAD (N85AV), Brainerd, MN, Minor damage. Nose gear collapsed on landing rollout. Inspection revealed leak in nose landing control and failed balancing rod.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
