## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT STATED THE FOLLOWING:

WE WERE CRUISING AT 4,500 FT. AND STARTED A DECENT TO 3,500 FT., THE AIRCRAFT WAS LEANED OUT, PUT IN THE MIXTURE AND REDUCED THE POWER TO 2000 RPM. THE RPM DROPPED STRAIGHT TO 1500 RPM. I INCREASED THE THROTTLE TO FULL POWER AND THE RPM INCREASED TO 1600 TO 1700 RPM. I INITIATED A DISTRESS CALL, SET THE AIRCRAFT FOR BEST GLIDE AND COMMENCED THE RESTART CHECKLIST. ENGINE WAS STILL TURNING. I DON?T RECALL HOW LONG THE CARB HEAT WAS OUT, BUT I PULLED IT OUT THREE TIMES. I INFORMED MY FRIENDS TO PUT ON THEIR LIFE VEST. WHEN WE LANDED ON THE WATER WE OPENED THE DOORS AND EXITED THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR15CA091](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR15CA091), Jan 26, 2015: Cessna 172N (N422BP), Makaha, HI, substantial damage. Probable cause: A partial loss of engine power for reasons that could not be determined because the airplane was ditched and not recovered.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
