## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT LEFT SRQ AT APPROXIMATELY 2:45PM LOCAL FOR AIRPORT MANATEE (48X) FOR A PLEASURE FLIGHT. PASSENGER NOT A PILOT. DECIDED AT 4:45PM TO RETURN TO SRQ. THEY WERE IN A HURRY TO GET BACK TO SRQ DUE TO THE TIME OF DAY.

PIC TRAINED HIS PASSENGER TO HOLD THE TOE BRAKES. HOWEVER, DURING THE SHUTDOWN ON THE FLIGHT TO AIRPORT MANATEE, PIC PULLED THE MIXTURE TO LEAN AND AT THE SAME TIME APPLIED FULL THROTTLE. THIS IS A PROCEDURE THE PIC USES TO ?EFFICIENTLY? SHUTDOWN THE ENGINE. PIC NEGLECTED TO RESET THE THROTTLE FOR THE START BECAUSE HE WAS IN A RUSH AND ADMITTENATLY DID NOT USE THE CHECKLIST. DURING THE HAND PROP OPERATION, THE ENGINE STARTED IMMEDIATELY AT FULL THROTTLE. THE AIRPLANE STARTED MOVING FORWARD. THE PIC TRIED TO HOLD THE AIRPLANE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CLIMB INTO THE AIRPLANE TO SHUT IT DOWN. PIC WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE AIRPLANE. THE AIRPLANE DID TWO CIRCLES IN THE GRASS PRIOR TO STRIKING THE HANGAR AND BONANZA. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING FULL THROTTLE. THE PIC RAN TO THE AIRPLANE, REACHED INTO THE

COCKPIT AND SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE.

NOTE: THE AIRPLANE DOES HAVE AN ELECTRIC STARTER. DUE TO THE AGE OF THE AIRPLANE, HOWEVER, THE PIC OFTEN HAND PROPS THE AIRPLANE TO SAVE THE WEAR AND TEAR ON THE STARTER. THIS PARTICULAR START WAS INTENTIONALLY HAND PROPPED DUE TO THE FACT THE PIC REPORTED THAT ENROUTE TO AIRPORT MANATEE, THE GENERATOR STOPPED CHARGING THE BATTERY AND HE WANTED TO CONSERVE BATTERY POWER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA15CA008](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA15CA008), Mar 12, 2015: Cessna 170A (N170TW), Palmetto, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to use the proper hand propping procedures, resulting in a runaway airplane.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
