## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MARCH 28, 2015, PILOT CHECKED THE FUEL QUANTITY INDICATORS AS PART OF HIS PRE-FLIGHT AND SAW HE HAD ABOUT A QUARTER TANK OF FUEL. PILOT DID NOT VISUALLY CHECK THE FUEL TANKS. PILOT TOOK OFF AND FLEW AROUND THE LOCAL AREA FOR ABOUT 45 MINUTES. PILOT WAS RETURNING TO THE AIRPORT WHEN HIS ENGINE SPUTTERED AND DIED. PILOT COULD NOT RESTART THE AIRCRAFT AND DECIDED TO LAND IN A FIELD. DURING HIS FLARE GUSTY WINDS SHIFTED AND AIRCRAFT LOST LIFT CAUSING IT TO HIT THE GROUND HARD AND CAUSING SIGNIFICANT AIRFRAME AND BREAKING MANY OF THE SUPPORTING METAL TUBULAR STRUCTURE THAT ARE PART OF THE AIRFRAME, LANDING GEAR AND FIREWALL. PILOT WAS UNINJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA15CA029](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA15CA029), Mar 28, 2015: Kerr John A Kitfox Classic IV (N195KF), Logan, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate preflight inspection/planning, which resulted in fuel exhaustion, and a loss of engine power en route.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
