## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

A COMPLETE RESTORATION HAD JUST BEEN FINISHED AND ALTHOUGH THE PILOT STATED HE HAD NOT INTENDED TO FLY THE AIRCRAFT BUT WAS MERELY PERFORMING A HIGH SPEED TAXI DOWN THE RUNWAY, THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE RUNWAY TO THE NORTH.

THE PILOT CHOSE TO REMAIN AIRBORNE AND COMPLETE THE TRAFFIC PATTERN. WHILE TURNING CROSSWIND, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO LOOSE POWER WHICH THE PILOT BELIEVES TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY CARBURETOR ICE.

THE PILOT DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH ALTITUDE NOR AIRSPEED TO RETURN TO THE RUNWAY BUT CRASHED INTO SOME TREES PARALLEL TO THE DOWNWIND LEG. THE AIRCRAFT SUFFERED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AND THE PILOT SUSTAINED ONLY MINOR INJURIES.

A FOLLOW UP EXAMINATION OF THE WRECKAGE REVEALED NO EVIDENCE AS TO WHY THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE LOST POWER.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR15LA156](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR15LA156), May 3, 2015: Buhl LA 1 (N352Y), Cottage Grove, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power on downwind for landing due to carburetor icing, which resulted in a forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
