## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT DEPARTED AIKEN MUNICIPAL AIRPORT , SOUTH CAROLINA (AIK) EN-ROUTE TO WENDELL H FORD AIRPORT, HAZARD, KENTUCKY (CPF). UPON REACHING VICINITY OF CPF, PILOT INITIATED A RIGHT DOWNWIND APPROACH, BEGAN TO MANEUVER ERRATICALLY EAST OF THE RUNWAY, DESCENDED RAPIDLY, AND IMPACTED THE GROUND, DESTROYING THE AIRCRAFT AND FATALLY INJURING THE PILOT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA15FA220](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA15FA220), May 21, 2015: Gulfstream American AA-5A (N26886), Rowdy, KY, destroyed, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The noninstrument-rated pilot’s decision to continue visual flight rules flight in instrument meteorological conditions, which resulted in a loss of control due to spatial disorientation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
