## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON REQUIRED CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHTS THE STUDENT PILOT INADVERTENTLY FLEW INTO A CANYON UNKNOWN TO HIM AND COULD NOT SUCCESSFULLY EXIT DUE TO AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE LIMITATIONS THEREBY CRASHING THE AIRCRAFT RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA15CA153](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA15CA153), Jul 1, 2015: Grumman American Avn. AA 5A (N9887U), Mackay, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's disorientation in mountainous terrain and course deviation into a canyon, which resulted in the airplane's inability to out climb terrain and a forced landing.

## Other reports on N9887U (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19930424028319I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19930424028319I), Apr 24, 1993: Gulstm AA5A (N9887U), Stormville, NY, Minor damage. Aircraft moved off taxiway onto grass. Turned 90 degrees. Struck a parked aircraft.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
