## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LAND AN EVECTOR-AEROTECHNIK SPORTSTAR SL, N163PH ON RUNWAY 03 AT ORANGE COUNTY AIRPORT (KMGJ). THE PILOT REPORTED FLARING TOO HIGH WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LAND AND THE AIRSPEED WAS RAPIDLY DIMINISHING. CONSEQUENTLY, A HIGH RATE OF DESCENT HAD DEVELOPED, LEADING TO A VERY HARD LANDING. THE RESULTING FORCE OF IMPACT CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO BALLOON TWO TIMES. WHILE "PORPOISING", THE PROPELLER MADE CONTACT WITH THE RUNWAY. THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED ON THE SECOND BOUNCE AND WAS DRIVEN BACKWARDS INTO THE BELLY OF THE AIRCRAFT CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE FIREWALL AND DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE. THE AIRCRAFT FINALLY CAME TO REST ON THE RUNWAY. THERE WERE NO PASSENGERS ONBOARD. NO OTHER PROPERTY DAMAGE OR INJURY TO PERSONS WERE REPORTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA15CA176](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA15CA176), Jul 5, 2015: Evektor-Aerotechnik Sportstar SL (N163PH), Montgomery, NY, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper pitch control which resulted in a hard landing. A factor contributing to the accident was the pilot's improper recovery from a bounced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
