## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

CESSNA 206 (N7269T) DEPARTED IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO (IDA) AIRPORT AND UPON REACHING 300 FT AGL THE PILOT AND PASSENGER SMELLED SMOKE. AS THEY TURNED ON THE DOWNWIND LEG ATTEMPTING TO RETURN TO THE RUNWAY FOR LANDING, SMOKE FILLED THE COCKPIT AND THE PILOT AND PASSENGER HAD ZERO VISIBILITY. THE PILOT OPENED HIS WINDOW AND LANDED THE AIRCRAFT WHILE HIS HEAD WAS STILL OUTSIDE THE WINDOW. THE AIRCRAFT STOPPED ON THE RUNWAY QUICKLY AND THE TWO OCCUPANTS EXITED THE PLANE. DAMAGE OCCURRED TO THE FIREWALL, NUMEROUS MOUNTING BRACKET, AIRCRAFT BATTERY, BATTERY BOX, FUSELAGE SKIN AND ENGINE COWLING, AND CABIN AIR INTAKE DOOR.
