## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT WAS TAXIING ON TAXIWAY A AT IXD. THE PILOT ADVISED THE TOWER HIS BRAKE HAD LOCKED UP AND HIS TIRE WAS SMOKING. THE CONTROLLER OBSERVED THE AIRCRAFT WITH BINOCULARS AND CONFIRMED THE TIRE WAS ON FIRE. THE CONTROLLER ADVISED THE PILOT TO EXIT THE AIRCRAFT AND CALLED THE AIRPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT. FIRE WAS EXTINGUISHED BUT NOT BEFORE DAMAGING THE TIRE, WHEEL PANT, FLAP, AND WING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN16LA023](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN16LA023), Oct 24, 2015: Piper PA-28-181 (N8227L), New Century, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s application of excessive brake pressure to maintain a safe taxi speed during a long, slightly downhill taxi with a strong quartering tailwind, which resulted in a brake fire.

## Other reports on N8227L (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19831223072759I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19831223072759I), Dec 23, 1983: Piper PA28181 (N8227L), San Jose, CA. Smoke in cockpit behind engine instruments. Shut off electronics. Found a burned fuel gauge coil.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
