## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 12/21/2015 ,N141MD, A HOMEBUILT EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT, DEPARTED BROOKHAVEN AIRPORT, KHWV, @ 0930 AND CRASHED LANDED ON NC11 COUNTY ROAD IN TEACHEY, NORTH CAROLINA, 3 HOURS LATER.

THE PIC STATED THAT HE DEPARTED BROOKHAVEN NEW YORK AIRPORT WITH 42 GALLONS OF FUEL ON BOARD (4HOURS) AND CRASHED LANDED IN NORTH CAROLINA, 3 HOURS AFTER DEPARTURE.

IT WAS DISCOVERED DURING THE INVESTIGATION THAT THE PILOT PLANNED ON FLYING AT THE ALTITUDE OF 6500', BUT DUE TO WEATHER AND WINDS, HE FLEW MOST OF THE TRIP AT 3000'.

THE LOWER THAN PLANNED ALTITUDE, AND THE DESIRE TO GET AS FAR AS HE COULD PRIOR TO STOPPING FOR GAS, CAUSED THE PIC TO RUN THE ENGINE AT A HIGHER RPM, WHICH ULTIMATELY CAUSED HIM TO RUN OUT OF FUEL.

THE PILOT LANDED, AND THEN HIT A SIGN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH THE RIGHT WING TIP, WHICH DAMGED THE ENTIRE 'COMPOSITE' RIGHT WING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA16CA099](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA16CA099), Dec 21, 2015: Davis Michael J MD Special (N141MD), Wallace, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's improper fuel planning, which resulted in fuel exhaustion.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
