## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PRIOR TO ACTUAL TRAINING, THE INSTRUCTOR BRIEFED FOR SIMULATED ENGINE FAILURE AFTER TAKE OFF. THE STUDENT STATED HE HAD TRAINED THE SITUATION WITH ANOTHER INSTRUCTOR PREVIOUSLY AND WAS AWARE OF THE PROCEDURE. APPROXIMATELY 200' AGL AFTER TAKE OFF THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR RETARDED THE ENGINE TO IDLE. THE STUDENT NOSED THE AIRCRAFT OVER BUT NOT FAR ENOUGH TO GAIN FORWARD AIRSPEED. BY THE TIME THE INSTRUCTOR TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT THEY HAD LOST TOO MUCH ALTITUDE TO PROPERLY RECOVER AND EXPERIENCED A HARD LANDING. THEY RETURNED TO THE HANGAR AND GROUNDED THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)
