## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE MORNING OF THE ACCIDENT THE AIRMAN HAD FLOWN WITH HIS FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR. THE FLIGHT CONSISTED OF AT LEAST FIVE LANDINGS, TWO ON GRAVEL AND THREE ON PAVEMENT. THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR DIRECTED THE STUDENT TO PRACTICE SOME SOLO TAKEOFF AND LANDINGS. ON THE STUDENT'S FIRST SOLO LANDING HE STATED THAT THE AIRPLANE PULLED TO THE RIGHT. THE STUDENT THEN ADDED FULL POWER IN AN ATTEMPT TO GO-AROUND. THE AIRCRAFT SUBSEQUENTLY DEPARTED RUNWAY 04 TO THE EAST COMING TO REST APPROXIMATELY 40 YARDS FROM THE RUNWAY. THE LANDING GEAR WAS DAMAGED AND THE RIGHT HAND WING STRUTS WERE BUCKLED. THERE WAS A PROP STRIKE AND DAMAGE TO THE COWLING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA16CA142](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA16CA142), Mar 1, 2016: Maule M5 (N12BE), Wasilla, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing, which resulted in a runway excursion, and an impact with terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
