## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE NON-INSTRUMENT RATED PILOT TOOK OFF TO THE NORTH INTO A MOUNTAINOUS AREA HAVING NO GROUND LIGHTS OR ANY OTHER KIND OF VISUAL REFERENCE, AND OVERCAST SKIES. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE NORTH OF THE AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY A POST CRASH FIRE CAUSING MINIMAL CHANCE FOR EVIDENCE COLLECTION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR16FA084](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR16FA084), Mar 13, 2016: Cessna 182A (N2230G), Alpine, WY, substantial damage, 4 fatal. Probable cause: The noninstrument-rated pilot's failure to maintain airspeed during the initial climb in dark night conditions with no visual reference, which resulted in a stall and collision with terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
