## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT WAS ATTEMPTING TO LAND WITH A CROSSWIND OF APPROXIMATELY 14 KNOTS FROM THE LEFT. DURING THE FLARE, THE AIRCRAFT DRIFTED TO THE RIGHT OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE RUNWAY PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN, AND THE PILOT INITIATED A GO-AROUND. DURING THE GO-AROUND THE PILOT ADDED FULL POWER, IMMEDIATELY RETRACTED THE FLAPS FROM 30 DEGREES TO 0 DEGREES, AND THEN LANDED IN THE GRASS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED DAMAGE TO THE EMPENNAGE UPON TOUCHDOWN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA16CA157](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA16CA157), Mar 20, 2016: Cessna 172 (N118ET), Nashville, TN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's excessive pitch up and incorrect action of selecting flaps to zero degrees, which resulted in a tail strike during a go-around in crosswind conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
