## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 15, 2016, ABOUT 1600 EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME (EDT) (2000Z), A SCHLEICHER ASW-19, N19VT, MADE AN UNPLANNED LANDING IN A CORNFIELD NEAR FRANKTON, INDIANA. THE PRIVATE PILOT, THE SOLE OCCUPANT, SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES WHEN THE AIRCRAFT NOSED OVER ON APPROACH. THE AIRCRAFT WAS REGISTERED TO AND OPERATED BY THE OWNER UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF TITLE 14 CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS (CFR) PART 91. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED, AND NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE FLIGHT DEPARTED FROM ALEXANDRIA AIRPORT (I99), ALEXANDRIA, INDIANA, ABOUT 1315 EDT AND WAS DESTINED FOR I99.

THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED I99 AIRPORT AT 1315 LOCAL, TOWED TO 2000' AGL, FLEW WEST TO FRANKFORT, INDIANA, AND THEN NORTHEAST TO KOKOMO. IT WAS ALOFT FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS WHEN IT HEADED BACK TO THE ALEXANDRIA AIRPORT FOR LANDING. THE PILOT SAID THAT AS HE DESCENDED HE DETERMINED HE WOULD NOT MAKE IT TO THE AIRPORT AND ELECTED TO MAKE AN OFF-AIRPORT LANDING. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ON A HEADING OF APPROXIMATELY 300 DEGREES, DESCENDING, WHEN IT ENCOUNTERED LOW ALTITUDE TURBULENCE AND STRUCK THE GROUND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA16CA244](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA16CA244), May 15, 2016: Schleicher ASW 19 (N19VT), Frankton, IN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's exceedance of the critical angle of attack on final approach in turbulent conditions, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall and collision with terrain.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
