## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT TOOK OFF FROM KRHV (NEAR SAN JOSE, CA) AND UPON PASSING SALEM, OR, AT 4500 FT., HE STARTED SMELLING SMOKE, THEN SAW SMOKE INSIDE COCKPIT. PILOT TRIED TURNING OFF MASTER BUT SINCE IT DIDN'T HELP, PILOT DECLARED AN EMERGENCY VIA RADIO TO ATC AND THEY PROVIDED VECTORS TO MMV.

WHEN AIRCRAFT WAS 2-3 MILES FROM MMV, PILOT STATED THE ENGINE MADE A LOUD GRINDING AND BANGING NOISE, THEN LOST POWER. PILOT DID NOT THINK HE COULD MAKE IT TO MMV SO HE ELECTED TO LAND IN A NEARBY FIELD.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA16CA317](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA16CA317), Jun 13, 2016: Ryan Navion (N4171K), McMinnville, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to replace the oil filler cap following the preflight inspection, which resulted in a loss of engine oil and engine power, an emergency landing, and impact with terrain.

## Other reports on N4171K (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 20031016029779I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/20031016029779I), Oct 16, 2003: Tmpson NAVION* (N4171K), Wilmington, OH, Minor damage. (-23) Pilot became distracted and failed to lower landing gear.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
