## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JULY 16, 2016, THE AIRMAN, WHILE ACTING AS PILOT-IN-COMMAND OF AN EXPERIMENTAL ZENITH MODEL CH-801, WAS INVOLVED IN AN AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT WHILE LANDING AT THE BEAUMONT HOTEL AIRPORT IN BEAUMONT, KANSAS. ACCORDING TO THE AIRMAN, THE AIRCRAFT?S FINAL APPROACH SPEED WAS FASTER THAN NORMAL TO ACCOMMODATE FOR THE GUSTY SURFACE WINDS; VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT WITH THE SURFACE WINDS AT TWELVE TO FIFTEEN KNOTS FROM THE SOUTHEAST. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED AT A FAST AIRSPEED IN THE CROSSWIND CONDITIONS, EXERIENCED A HARD LANDING AND SUBSEQUENTLY BOUNCED. AS THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED BACK UP IN THE AIR, THE AIRCRAFT STALLED, AND IMPACTED THE GROUND AND FLIPPED OVER ONTO ITS BACK. PURSUANT TO THE AIRMAN?S STATEMENT, A POST ACCIDENT INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT REVEALED THAT THE NOSE GEAR BUNGEE FAILED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A LOSS OF RUDDER EFFECTIVENESS. THE INVESTIGATION DID NOT REVEAL ANY AIRCRAFT ANOMALY OR MALFUNCTION THAT WOULD HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE INITIAL ACCIDENT SEQUENCE. THE AIRMAN AND THE ONLY PASSENGER ABOARD THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES AS A RESULT OF THEM EXISTING THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT DID NOT PRESENT ANY MECHANICAL ANOMALIES BEFORE OR DURING THE FLIGHT UNTIL THE CH-801 MADE INITIAL CONTACT WITH THE GROUND.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA16CA379](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA16CA379), Jul 16, 2016: Jesse Saint/Troy Townsend/Etha CH-801 (N801G), Beaumont, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's incorrect pitch control during the landing flare in gusty crosswind conditions, which resulted in a hard bounced landing and a nose over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
