## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PIC WAS GETTING INSTRUMENT INSTRUCTION AND WAS COMPLETING AN ASR APPROACH AND WHEN THE POWER WAS BROUGHT IN TO LEVEL OFF AT THE DH THE AIRCRAFT STARTED RUNNING ROUGH. THE IP TOOK THE CONTROLS AND STATED TO THE PIC TO CHANGE TANKS AND THE ENGINE QUIT. PIC ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE AIRCRAFT. THE IP TRIED TO MAKE IT TO THE AIRPORT OR THE ROAD BUT HE STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO MAKE EITHER SO THEY OPT FOR THE CORN FIELD. AIRCRAFT WAS TAKEN BY TRUCK TO THE LOCAL FBO AND INVESTIGATION REVEALED THAT THE RIGHT TANK WHICH THEY WERE ON WAS ALMOST EMPTY AND THE OTHER TANK WAS HALF FULL. IT IS BELEIVED THAT THE PIC WHEN SWITCHING TANKS TURNED IT TO OFF INSTEAD OF THE LEFT TANK.

TALKING TO THE PIC HE STATED THAT HE DID NOT POP THE CAP ON THE TANKS AND VISUALLY CHECK BUT INSTEAD USED THE FUEL GAUGES TO ESTIMATE HIS FUEL IN THE TANKS. THIS IS THE PIC'S FIRST ACCIDENT AND HAD NO PRIOR ENFORCEMENTS OR INCIDENTS. THEREFORE I WILL SEND THIS ACCIDENT TO THE FAASTEAM FOR REMEDIAL TRAINING.
