## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AIR RACES - N777FJ WAS LANDING IN THE NUMBER TWO POSITION BEHIND N767JW. N777FJ TOUCHED DOWN AND THEN BEGAN TO OSCILLATE. N767JW HAD NOT LEFT THE RUNWAY. N777FJ STRUCK THE RIGHT WING OF N767JW AND THEN SPUN AROUND AND ROLLED BACKWARDS UNTIL THE TAIL WHEEL HIT A GROOVE IN THE RUNWAY, WHICH RIPPED THE EMPENNAGE IN HALF AND THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST.

## Other aircraft in the event

- N767JW, Tatelman-Pitts SPECIAL S-1: no report for this aircraft; [N767JW](https://openairdocs.org/aircraft/N767JW) is registered now

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA16CA517](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA16CA517), Sep 18, 2016: Jerant Frank Mong (N777FJ), Reno, NV, substantial damage. Probable cause: The other pilot's failure to maintain adequate separation and visual lookout during landing, which resulted in his airplane colliding with the airplane ahead of it on the runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
