## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON SHORT FINAL THE PILOT EXPERIENCED UNCOMMANDED FLAP RETRACTION, WENT FROM FLAPS FULL DOWN TO FULL UP. PILOT INCREASED APPROACH SPEED FROM 90 TO 115 TO ARREST RATE OF DESCENT AND LANDED. PILOT UNABLE TO BRING THE AIRCRAFT TO A STOP PRIOR TO THE END OF THE RUNWAY. AIRCRAFT CONTINUED OFF OF RUNWAY ACROSS GRASSY AREA, ACROSS DIRT ROAD, AND INTO SWAMP. PILOT ESTIMATED AIRCRAFT SPEED AT 70 KNOTS WHEN DEPARTING END OF RUNWAY. INVESTIGATION SHOW LIGHT RUBBER MARKING ON RUNWAY INDICATING BRAKING ACTION UP TO POINT WHERE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED RUNWAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA16LA322](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA16LA322), Sep 23, 2016: Aero Vodochody L 39 (N139AJ), Norfolk, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: An uncommanded flap retraction for reasons that could not be determined, as a postaccident examination of the flap system did not reveal evidence of any preaccident anomalies.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
