## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THIS AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT HAD NOT BEEN REPORTED TO THE NTSB AT THE TIME OF ITS DISCOVERY BY THIS INSPECTOR ON 10/20/2016.

THE PILOT ENTERED DOWNWIND TO FLY A STANDARD LEFT-HAND TRAFFIC PATTERN TO LAND ON RUNWAY 30. THE PILOT STATED TO THIS INSPECTOR THAT THE APPROACH WAS A BIT FAST AND LONG AND THAT AT NO TIME DURING THE APPROACH WAS A GO AROUND CONSIDERED. UPON TOUCHDOWN AND ROLLOUT ON THE WET, GRASS RUNWAY, THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO SUFFICIENTLY BRAKE AND MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE END OF THE RUNWAY, CROSSED A DEEPLY, RUTTED, DIRT ROAD THAT RUNS PERPENDICULAR TO THE RUNWAY. AFTER CROSSING THE ROAD, THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED DOWN A SOFT ENBANKMENT. CONSEQUENTLY, AS THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED DOWN THIS SOFT ENBANKMENT, THE NOSE LANDING GEAR SNAPPED AND COLLAPSED, WHICH, IN TURN, CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT'S NOSE TO ABRUPTLY LOWER AND THE PROPELLER TO STRIKE THE EARTH WITH ROTATIONAL POWER. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A STOP APPROXIMATELY 50 FEET FROM THE END OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT AND THE ONE PASSENGER ON BOARD WERE NOT INJURED. AIRCRAFT DAMAGE AS FOLLOWS; SUBSTANTIAL STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE FIREWALL, THE ENGINE MOUNTING ASSEMBLY WAS BENT OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND DEFORMED, THE PROPELLER WAS DESTROYED, THE WING TIPS WERE DAMAGED AND VARIOUS COWLINGS AND FAIRINGS SUSTAINED DAMAGE.

Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to go around after recognizing that the airplane was high and fast, which resulted in a long landing on a wet runway and a runway excursion.
