## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON OCTOBER 12, 2016, AT APPROXIMATELY 1000 EASTERN DAYLIGHT TIME (EDT) (1400Z), A LUSCOMBE 8B, SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AFTER IMPACTING THE TERRAIN WHILE ATTEMPTING TO LAND ON RUNWAY 27 AT HUNTINGBURG AIRPORT (HNB) HUNTINGBURG INDIANA.

THE AIRCRAFT INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT WAS A 1941 LUSCOMBE 8B, REGISTRATION NUMBER N39083. THE AIRCRAFT IS REGISTERED TO ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, HUNTINGBURG IN, THE AIRCRAFT OPERATED UNDER 14 CFR PART 91, AND WAS BASED AT HNB. THE AIRCRAFT WAS ON A LOCAL PLEASURE FLIGHT WITH THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^PILOT AS THE ONLY OCCUPANT ON BOARD. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT DEPARTURE FROM HNB WITH WINDS FROM THE SOUTH AT 6 KNOTS. NO FLIGHT PLAN WAS ON FILE OR REQUIRED.

AT THE TIME OF ACCIDENT THE HNB AWOS WAS REPORTING WINDS FROM THE SOUTH AT 11 KNOTS GUSTING TO 16 KNOTS, VISIBILITY AT 10 STATUTE MILES, AND ALTIMETER AT 30.19 INCHES HG. THE PILOT STATEMENT AND INTERVIEW PROVIDED THAT UPON INITIAL TOUCHDOWN A WIND GUST LIFTED THE LEFT WING AND THE PILOT TRIED TO COMPENSATE WITH AILERONS AND THROTTLE BUT WAS SLOW TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT.

EXAMINATION OF THE SITE REVEALED THE AIRCRAFT HAD INITIALLY TOUCHED DOWN APPROXIMATELY 724 FEET PAST THE THRESHOLD OF RUNWAY 27, 20 FEET LEFT OF THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO DRIFT LEFT OF CENTERLINE FOR ANOTHER 340 FEET BEFORE BECOMING AIRBORNE AGAIN AND CONTINUING APPROXIMATELY ANOTHER 200 FEET. THE AIRCRAFT TOUCHED DOWN AGAIN AND CONTINUED TO BOUNCE/SKIP FOR APPROXIMATELY 300 FEET BEFORE BEGINNING A SHALLOW CLIMB BUT STEEP BANK LEFT TURN. THE PLANE IMPACTED THE GROUND WITH THE LEFT WINGTIP, WHICH INDUCED A SHARP YAW TO THE LEFT AND PITCHED NOSE DOWN, IMPACTING THE GROUND IN THE GRASS AREA BETWEEN THE RUNWAY AND TAXIWAY, 18 TO 20 FEET AND TO THE LEFT OF INITIAL WINGTIP GROUND CONTACT. THE AIRCRAFT STOPPED 155 FEET SOUTH OF THE RUNWAY ON A HEADING OF APPROXIMATELY 175 DEGREES MAGNETIC.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA021](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA021), Oct 12, 2016: Luscombe 8 (N39083), Huntingburg, IN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s delayed crosswind correction during the landing roll with a gusting left crosswind, which resulted in the airplane weathervaning and nosing over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
