## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON OCTOBER 22, 2016, AT APPROXIMATELY 1700 UTC, THE AIRMAN, AND PILOT-IN-COMMAND OF A BOEING PT-17 STEARMAN SERIES AIRCRAFT, WAS INVOLVED IN AN AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT WHILE LANDING AT THE HIGH POINT AIRPORT (3KS5), VALLEY CENTER, KANSAS; THE PT-17 IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY THE AIRMAN. PURSUANT TO THE AIRMAN?S VERBAL STATEMENT, THE PT-17 AND A FAIRCHILD PT-26 SERIES AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE WESTPORT AIRPORT (71K), WICHITA, KANSAS, FOR A SHORT FORMATION FLIGHT TO 3KS5. VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS (VMC) PREVAILED AT 3KS5, WITH SOUTHERLY SURFACE WINDS AT SIX KNOTS; AIRCRAFT WERE UTILIZING THE NORTH/SOUTH ORIENTED GRASS/TURF RUNWAY. UPON ARRIVAL AT 3KS5, THE FAIRCHILD PT-26 SERIES AIRCRAFT LANDED ON THE SOUTHERLY ORIENTED RUNWAY FIRST AND EXITED TO THE WEST SIDE FOR PARKING; THE AIRCRAFT LANDED AND EXITED ABOUT 2/3RDS OF THE WAY DOWN THE RUNWAY. THE FAIRCHILD PT-26 PARKED ON THE WEST SIDE, FACING EAST, WITH THE AIRCRAFT?S LONGITUDINAL AXIS PERPENDICULAR TO THE LANDING RUNWAY. AS THE FAIRCHILD PT-26 WAS TAXIING INTO THE PARKING AREA, THE BOEING PT-17 STEARMAN WAS LANDING ON THE SOUTHERLY RUNWAY. PURSUANT TO BOTH AIRMEN?S STATEMENTS, THE BOEING PT-17 LANDED APPROXIMATELY ½-WAY DOWN THE GRASS/TURF RUNWAY AT AN AIRSPEED MUCH FASTER THAN NORMAL. THE AIRMAN AND PILOT-IN-COMMAND OF THE BOEING PT-17 ALSO STATED THAT DUE TO THE LIMITED FORWARD VISIBILITY, THE AIRMAN BELIEVED THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS SLIGHT RIGHT OF THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE. DURING THE TOUCHDOWN PHASE, THE BOEING PT-17 TOUCHED-DOWN FIRMLY AND DRIFTED RIGHT OF CENTERLINE, CAUSING THE LOWER RIGHT WING TO IMPACT THE NOSE OF THE FAIRCHILD PT-26 WHICH WAS PARKING ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE RUNWAY; THE FAIRCHILD PT-26?S ENGINE/PROPELLER WERE OPERATING AT AN IDLE POWER SETTING. THE FAIRCHILD PT-26 SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE FIREWALL AS A RESULT OF THE IMPACT. THE BOEING PT-17, UPON IMPACTING THE FAIRCHILD PT-26 SUBSEQUENTLY IMPACTED A TREE LOCATED ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE RUNWAY CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO BOTH THE UPPER AND LOWER RIGHT AND LEFT WING SECTIONS; THE TAILWHEEL BRACKET AND STRUCTURE WAS ALSO DAMAGED. NEITHER THE AIRMAN AND PILOT-IN-COMMAND OF THE FAIRCHILD PT-26, NOR THE AIRMAN AND PILOT-IN-COMMAND OF THE BOEING PT-17, INCLUDING THE ADDITIONAL PASSENGER ON-BOARD, SUSTAINED INJURY. A POST-ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION OF BOTH AIRCRAFT DID NOT REVEAL ANY AIRCRAFT ANOMALIES THAT WOULD HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS EVENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll and to see and avoid the airplane stopped on the edge of the runway.

Aircraft N68117 was landing to the north on the turf next to runway 17/35.after touch down, there were a couple of small bounces felt by the passenger, then…
