## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON DECEMBER 4, 2016 THE PILOT IN COMMAND (PIC) DEPARTED BEVERLY MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (BVY) EN ROUTE TO HAMPTON AIRPORT (7B3). WHILE TURNING FROM BASE LEG TO FINAL ON RUNWAY 02, THE PIC STATED THAT HE OVERSHOT FINAL DUE TO A CROSSWIND. HE STATED THAT HE CORRECTED BACK TO LINE UP WITH THE RUNWAY, BUT CONTINUED TO DESCEND AS HE CORRECTED. AFTER CORRECTING BACK TO THE CENTER LINE, THE PIC STATED THAT HE NOTICED HE WAS AT A LOWER THAN NORMAL ALTITUDE AND APPLIED POWER TO STOP HIS DESCENT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER APPLYING POWER HE STATED THAT HE IMPACTED A TREE WITH THE RIGHT WING OF THE AIRCRAFT, AT WHICH POINT THE AIRCRAFT BECAME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. THE PIC STATED THAT HE ATTEMPTED TO AIM FOR A SECTION OF SMALL TREES AND BRUSH INSTEAD OF THE CLEAR AREA ON SHORT FINAL TO THE RUNWAY.

THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND IN AN AREA OF SMALL TREES AND BRUSH 550 FEET SHORT OF THE THRESHOLD OF RUNWAY 02, AND 85 FEET EAST OF THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED, WITH SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE UPPER AND LOWER WINGS, THE FUSELAGE FORWARD OF THE PILOT COMPARTMENT, AND THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER. A PORTION OF THE LEFT WING WAS LOCATED IN A TREE APPROXIMATELY 20 FEET TALL JUST PRIOR TO THE LANDING LOCATION. EVIDENCE OF THE ORIGINAL IMPACT WAS DISCOVERED ON A TREE APPROXIMATELY 60 FEET TALL THAT IS LOCATED 90 FEET BEFORE THE LANDING LOCATION OF THE AIRCRAFT, ALSO ALIGNED 85 FEET EAST OF THE RUNWAY CENTERLINE. THE SURROUNDING AREA IS SUBURBAN RESIDENTIAL, WITH NUMEROUS SINGLE FAMILY HOMES IN THE VICINITY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA087](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA087), Dec 4, 2016: Jack Fehling Celebrity (N28JF), North Hampton, NH, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s unstabilized approach, which resulted in the biplane being low and striking trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
