## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON DECEMBER 5, 2016, AT APPROXIMATELY 2:43 PM EDT (1943Z), N863RW, AN EMBRAER ERJ 170-100SE, STRUCK A LARGE BIRD CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT HAND SECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT NOSE. THE AIRCRAFT, OPERATED BY REPUBLIC AIRLINE, INC., WAS OPERATING AS A REPOSITION FLIGHT FROM ST. LOUIS, MO (STL) TO NEWARK, NJ (EWR). THE AIRCRAFT IS REGISTERED TO SHUTTLE AMERICA CORP AND LEASED TO REPUBLIC AIRLINE, INC. THE FLIGHT WAS OPERATING UNDER AN INSTRUMENT FLIGHT PLAN AND VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS PREVAILED AT THE TIME OF THIS INCIDENT.

DURING DESCENT INTO EWR, AT 7000 FEET, THE CAPTAIN STATED THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A LARGE BIRD FOLLOWED BY AN EICAS CAUTION MESSAGE FOR AN ICE PROBE NUMBER TWO FAILURE. THE FLIGHT CREW HEARD THE SOUND OF RUSHING AIR AND NOTICED A FLUCTUATION IN CABIN ALTITUDE OF APPROXIMATELY 600 FEET PER MINUTE (FT/M) WITH THE HIGHEST CHANGE REACHING 3700 FT/M. THE COPILOTS AIRSPEED INDICATOR DIFFERED BY 20 KNOTS FROM THE CAPTAIN?S AIRSPEED INDICATOR. IN ADDITION, THE COPILOTS ALTIMETER INDICATED 300 FEET HIGHER THAN THE CAPTAIN?S ALTIMETER. THE CREW RAN THE QUICK REFERENCE CHECKLIST, DECLARED AN EMERGENCY, AND LANDED SAFELY AT EWR.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
