## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED IN PRINEVILLE, OR. THE PILOT WAS ON APPROACH TO LAND IN LAGRANDE, OR. HE SELECTED GEAR DOWN. HE DID NOT HEAR ANY OF THE NORMAL GEAR EXTENSION SOUNDS AND DID NOT GET A GEAR DOWN LIGHT. HE CONTACTED THE FBO AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT HIS GEAR WAS NOT EXTENDED. THE PILOT TRIED TO LOWER THE GEAR SEVERAL TIMES USING BOTH THE NORMAL SYSTEM AND THE EMERGENCY SYSTEM WITH NO CHANGE IN GEAR POSITION. HE THEN ELECTED TO LAND ON THE AIRPORT INFIELD. THE AIRPORT HAD APPROXIMATELY 1/2 INCH OF SNOW ON THE GROUND. THE PILOT SLOWED THE AIRCRAFT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE. HE TOUCHED DOWN IN THE INFIELD GRASS AND SNOW PARALLEL TO RUNWAY 34 AFTER THE FIRST TAXIWAY INTERSECTION. THE AIRCRAFT SLID PARALLEL TO THE RUNWAY FOR ABOUT 200 YARDS COMING TO REST HEADING APPROXIMATELY 040. THE PILOT AND PASSANGER SECURED THE AIRCRAFT AND DISEMBARKED. AMENDED 05-17-2018, DURING THE AIRCRAFT REBUILD IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FAILURE OF THE LANDING GEAR SYSTEM WAS CAUSED BY A BADLY WORN ELECTRIC MOTOR. THE FAILURE OF THE EMERGENCY EXTENSION SYSTEM WAS CAUSED BY A BADLY WORN AND BINDING ENGAGE/DISENGAGE GEAR SET. MOONEY SERVICE MANUAL DOES NOT HAVE INSPECTION OR REPLACEMENT CRITERIA FOR THESE COMPONENTS.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
