## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JANUARY 14, 2017 AT APPROXIMATELY 1717 LOCAL, A BUCCANEER II EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT DEPARTED FROM THE SUWANEE RIVER UPSTREAM (NORTH BOUND). THE PILOT THEN REVERSED DIRECTION, LINED UP WITH THE RIVER, DESCENDED AND FLEW LOW LEVEL SOUTHBOUND OVER THE RIVER. DURING THE LOW LEVEL REGIME, THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK POWER LINES THAT CROSSED THE RIVER EAST TO WEST PERPENDICULAR TO THE SHORELINE. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST INVERTED IN THE CENTER OF THE RIVER, FACING NORTH BOUND. THE PILOT SUSTAINED FATAL INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA17FA088](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA17FA088), Jan 14, 2017: Sharpe William L Buccaneer II B (N696FT), Mayo, FL, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to see and avoid power lines while flying at low altitude.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
