## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MARCH 2ND, 2017 AT APPROXIMATELY 1915 UTC, A MAULE M-5, PILOTED BY THE AIRMAN WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED DURING AN OFF AIRPORT LANDING IN ROXBURY, KANSAS. PURSUANT TO VERBAL STATEMENTS FROM THE AIRMAN, THE AIRMAN WAS ATTEMPTING TO LAND TO THE WEST ON AN EAST-WEST COUNTY HIGHWAY ¼ MILE EAST OF TOWN. WINDS AT THE NEAREST AWOS (KSLN) WERE REPORTED AT 1853Z 33013KT AND 1953Z 31012G27KT. THE WEATHER WAS VMC AT THE TIME.

UPON TOUCH DOWN THE AIRMAN REPORTED THE RIGHT WING BEING PICKED UP BY THE WIND. THE AIRMAN ATTEMPTED TO ADD FULL POWER BUT DUE TO CROSSING POWER LINES OVERHEAD, WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH A GO-AROUND. THE AIRCRAFT VEERED TO THE LEFT WHERE THE LEFT WING IMPACTED THE GROUND 132 FEET FROM THE ROAD. THE LEFT WING CONTINUED TO DIG INTO SOFT GROUND UNTIL THE AIRCRAFT CARTWHEELED ON ITS NOSE AND RIGHT WING, SHEERING THE PROPELLER. THE RIGHT WING IMPACTED THE GROUND, SPUN THE AIRCRAFT, WHERE THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A REST FACING NORTHWEST 215 FEET FROM THE ROAD IN A GRASS FIELD. THE ENGINE MOUNT WAS BROKE AND THE LEFT LANDING GEAR STRUT WAS DAMAGED. AIRFRAME STRUCTURAL TUBING WAS BENT AND FRACTURED, AS WELL AS THE WINDSHIELD AND FLIGHT CONTROLS. POST-ACCIDENT INSPECTION REVEALED ALL ENGINE CONTROLS AND AILERON AND ELEVATOR CONTROLS WERE SHEARED OR BECAME UNATTACHED IN THE ACCIDENT. THE RUDDER PEDALS WERE STILL CONNECTED TO THE RUDDER. THE AIRMAN WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT ONBOARD AND WAS ABLE TO EXIT THE AIRCRAFT WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. THE AIRMAN WAS UNINJURED IN THE ACCIDENT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA170](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA170), Mar 2, 2017: Maule M5 (N56552), Roxbury, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during a go-around.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
