## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE AIRCRAFT WAS CLIMBING THROUGH 3500 FEET WHEN THE ENGINE EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF POWER AND DECREASE IN RPM OF APPROXIMATELY 200. THE PILOT ELECTED TO RETURN TO HIS HOME AIRPORT WHICH WAS 3 MILES AWAY. THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING AND RESPONSIVE TO THROTTLE INPUTS. THE PILOT ENTERED A NORMAL TRAFFIC PATTERN AND WHEN TURNING TO THE BASE LEG HE REALIZED THE AIRCRAFT WAS TOO LOW. THE PILOT ADDED POWER BUT THE RESPONSE FROM THE ENGINE WAS INSUFFICIENT TO CHECK THE DESCENT. THE AIRCRAFT HIT THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 500 FEET SHORT OF THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD OF THE RUNWAY 31. IT REMAINED UPRIGHT AND THERE WAS NO POST-CRASH FIRE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)
