## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE FLYING WITH A PASSENGER AT

APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES INTO THE FLIGHT, PILOT SET UP FOR A PITCH UP AND 180 DEGREE TURN TO DEMONSTRATE A NO FLAP WATER LANDING. HE PITCHED THE NOSE UP, TURNED RIGHT, UNLOADED THE AIRCRAFT AND ALLOWED THE NOSE TO FALL BELOW THE HORIZON TO ACCELERATE AND REGAIN THE AIRSPEED THAT HE TRADED FOR ALTITUDE. WHILE DESCENDING, HE NOTICED AN EXCESSIVE DESCENT RATE AND LESS ACCELERATION THAN EXPECTED. PILOT ENSURED FULL POWER WAS SELECTED TO ATTEMPT A GO AROUND. HE WAS NOT ABLE TO AVOID A TOUCHDOWN, WHICH RESULTED IN A HARD LANDING. THE HARD LANDING CAUSED THE RIGHT SEAWING COVER TO DETACH FROM THE AIRCRAFT RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE HULL WHICH ALLOWED THE AIRCRAFT TO TAKE ON WATER. BOTH PILOT AND PASSENGER DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY INJURIES. NTSB PRELIMINARY REPORT IS SHOWING ACCIDENT OCCURED ON 4/2/2017. HAVE NOTIFIED NTSB IIC KATE BENHOFF OF THE ERROR WHO INOFRMED ME THAT THE FINAL REPORT WILL HAVE THE CORRECT DATE OF THE ACCIDENT ONCE IT IS RELEASED FROM WASHINGTON.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA213](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA213), Apr 1, 2017: Icon A5 (N672BA), Key Largo, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain a proper descent rate during the approach, which resulted in a hard landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
