## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT WAS APPROACHING TO LAND ON HIS PRIVATE STRIP, RUNWAY 31, 1600' LONG. HE STATED THAT THE WINDS WERE FROM THE SOUTHWEST, GUSTING BETWEEN 25 AND 35 KNOTS. BECAUSE OF TREES, RUNWAY 13 IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR LANDING. DUE TO THE WINDS, THE PIC EXECUTED A GO-AROUND ON HIS FIRST ATTEMPT. ON HIS SECOND ATTEMPT, AS HE DESCENDED BELOW THE TREE TOPS, IT SEEMED THAT THE WINDS SUDDENTLY STOPPED AND THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO SINK RAPIDLY. THE PIC BELIEVES HE ADDED FULL POWER, BUT THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED TO SINK AND HIT THE GROUND NOSE-FIRST AND THEN ON THE RIGHT MAIN GEAR. THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED/SKIDDED FOR APPROXIMATELY 30 FEET AND THEN FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN AND CAME TO A STOP.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA254](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA254), Apr 28, 2017: Cessna 172 (N64144), Columbia, KY, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain a flare during landing in variable, gusting wind conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
