## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT INTENDED TO MAKE A LOCAL FLIGHT IN VICINITY OF GENEVA MUNICIPAL AIPORT, TO RUN AIRCRAFT ENGINE AFTER MAINTENANCE WAS PERFORMED. PILOT STATED HE RELIED UPON AIRCRAFT FUEL GAUGES TO DETERMINE AMOUNT OF FUEL ON BOARD AND DID NOT VISUALLY LOOK IN FUEL TANKS. PILOT STATED THAT FUEL GAUGES INDICATED BETWEEN 1/4 AND 1/2 FULL OF FUEL BEFORE TAKEOFF. PILOT REPORTED NORMAL RUNUP AND TAKEOFF. PILOT CLIMBED TO APPROXIMATELY 2500 FEET AND WAS 8 -10 MILES FROM AIRPORT, MANEUVERING. APPROXIMATELY 20-30 MINUTES INTO THE FLIGHT, THE ENGINE BEGIN TO SPUTTER. PILOT TURNED TOWARDS THE AIRPORT BUT DECIDED HE WAS TOO FAR AWAY TO MAKE THE AIRPORT IF THE ENGINE QUIT. ENGINE BEGAN TO CUT OUT MORE AND PILOT SELECTED A PLOWED FIELD TO LAND IN. PILOT MADE AN UNEVENTFUL GEAR UP LANDING. ENGINE NEVER TOTALLY QUIT BEFORE LANDING BUT WAS SPUTTERING AND SURGING. DAMAGE LIMITED TO PROPELLER AND BOTTOM OF FUSELAGE. PILOT ADMITTED THAT HE RAN OUT OF FUEL. INVESTIGATOR WAS UNABLE TO DRAIN ANY FUEL FROM WING TANKS. FUEL LINE FROM FUEL PUMP TO FUEL INJECTOR WAS DRY.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
