## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 5/20/2017 N168AT-CYGNET (LIGHT SPORT WEIGHT SHIFT) BEING PILOTED BY CFI ^BENJAMIN PEDERSEN^ WITH STUDENT PILOT ^WALTER DENTON^ (STUDENT PILOT STATED HE WAS NOT AWARE THAT THEY WERE ACTUALLY GOING TO FLY DUE TO THE GUSTY WINDS) WERE PEFORMING AN INSTRUCTIONAL FLIGHT (CFI'S FIRST IN THIS MAKE/MODEL IN OVER A YEAR) AT CASA GRANDE AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AFTER LANDING AND GOING OFF THE RUNWAY AND FLIPPING OVER. THE STUDENT PILOT STATED THE WIND WAS VERY GUSTY FROM 25' TO 200' OFF THE RUNWAY AS THEY ATTEMPTED TO LAND ON 2 PREVIOUS ATTEMPTS. THE STUDENT PILOT HAD VARIOUS CUTS AND SCRAPES FROM THE DIRT AND GRAVEL, THE CFI PILOT STATED NO INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA292](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA292), May 21, 2017: Airtime Cygnet (N168AT), Casa Grande, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor's failure to maintain directional control during takeoff in gusting crosswind conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
