## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JUNE 2, 2017 AT APPROXIMATELY 2110 UTC, A MAGNAGHI AERONAUTICA SKY ARROW LSA, FLOWN BY THE PILOT WAS DESTROYED DURING TAKEOFF FROM A PRIVATE AIRFIELD NEAR CHAPMAN, KANSAS. WINDS AT THE NEAREST AWOS (KFRI) WERE REPORTED AT 2058Z 16011KT AND AT 2158Z 17011KT. THE WEATHER WAS VMC AT THE TIME.

PURSUANT TO VERBAL AND WRITTEN STATEMENTS FROM WITNESSES AND THE AIRMAN, AFTER TAKEOFF AND AT AN ALTITUDE OF APPROXIMATELY FIFTY FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL, THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO ROLL TO THE RIGHT. THE AIRMAN ATTEMPTED TO LEVEL THE WINGS WITH LEFT AILERON CONTROL INPUT. THE AIRMAN STATED THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH AILERON AUTHORITY TO LEVEL THE WINGS AND AT THAT TIME REALIZED HE WAS GOING TO IMPACT THE GROUND. HE CONTINUED TO INPUT LEFT AILERON IN ORDER TO TOUCH DOWN AS LEVEL AS POSSIBLE HOWEVER THE RIGHT WING IMPACTED THE TERRAIN FIRST, FOLLOWED BY THE NOSE. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A REST 309 FEET FROM THE RUNWAY IN AN UNIMPROVED SECTION OF THE AIRPORT.

THE AFT-PORTION OF THE AIRCRAFT ROLLED OVER THE COCKPIT AND PINNED THE AIRMAN INSIDE. WITH THE ENGINE CONTROLS OUT OF REACH THE AIRMAN, THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING AT FULL POWER UNTIL A WITNESS TO THE ACCIDENT WAS ABLE TO TURN IT OFF. THE AIRMAN, WHO WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT, WAS EXTRACTED FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND HAD MINOR INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA319](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA319), Jun 2, 2017: Magnaghi Aeronautica SKY Arrow LSA (N600US), Chapman, KS, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain lateral/bank control during the takeoff climb in gusting crosswind conditions.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
