## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING DOWNWIND LANDING TO RWY 34 THE AIRPLANE STRUCK A BIRD AT THE LEFT WING LEADING EDGE. THE PILOT SAID THAT HE ADVISED THE FIELD HE HAD HANDLING AND CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE. HE THEN CONTINUED TO AN UNEVENTFUL LANDING WITH NO INJURIES. POST FLIGHT INSPECTION SHOWED THE LEFT WING LEADING EDGE WAS CRUSHED DOWN TO THE SPAR CAUSING ABOUT AN OVERALL THREE FOOT LENGTH OF LEADING EDGE TO BE DAMAGED. WITH THE LEADING EDGE REMOVED THERE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ANY WING FORWARD SPAR DAMAGE OR DEFLECTION. THE BIRD WAS LATER RECOVERED INTACT AND APPEARED TO BE A VULTURE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA373](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA373), Jun 25, 2017: Cessna 172 (N79938), Roseburg, OR, substantial damage. Probable cause: An in-flight collision with a bird during the approach.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
