## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT ENCOUNTERED A DOWNDRAFT ON SHORT FINAL WHILE LANDING TO THE WEST AT A PRIVATE AIRSTRIP. THE DOWN DRAFT CHANGED THE PITCH OF THE AIRCRAFT CAUSING THE SUN TO DROP DOWN INTO THE PILOT?S EYES, AT WHICH POINT HIS FORWARD VISION WAS OBSCURED. THE PILOT HELD PITCH AND MAINTAINED POWER. HE WAS CONCERNED THAT ADDING POWER WOULD CAUSE HIM TO LAND TOO FAR DOWNFIELD AND POTENTIALLY INTO TREES AT THE WEST END OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY AND ROLLED BACKWARDS INTO A BRUSH PILE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA421](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA421), Jul 3, 2017: Aviat A 1 (N368HY), Dixie, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain an appropriate glidepath to landing with sun glare and downdraft conditions, which resulted in the airplane landing in a ravine short of the runway.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
