## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

7/12/17 - NOTIFIED THIS DATE, APPROXIMATELY 1500 OF AN OCCURRENCE OF AN AIRCRAFT THAT HAD GROUND LOOPED YESTERDAY (7/11/17), APPROXIMATELY 12:25 PACIFIC STANDARD TIME, AT FRIDAY HARBOR, WA. CONTACTED NTSB INVESTIGATOR THIS DATE AND LEFT MESSAGE ON VOICE MAIL TO GET IN CONTACT WITH US AT THE FSDO. THERE WERE 3 PASSENGERS ON BOARD, NO INJURIES.

7/13/17 - SPOKE WITH PILOT^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ OF THE AIRCRAFT. HE WAS LANDING RUNWAY 16 AND CAUGHT A GUST OF WIND OUT OF APPROXIMATELY 080 ON ROLL OUT. HE WAS PUSHED INTO THE GRASS. ONE OF THE GEAR CAUGHT THE TURF AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL HE SLID DOWN AND THE AIRCRAFT TIPPED TO ITS SIDE AND THERE WAS SOME MINOR DAMAGE TO THE WING TIP ALONG WITH THE LANDING GEAR. RECORDS.7/14/17 - SPOKE WITH FRIDAY HARBOR AIRPORT MANAGER. HE EXPLAINED SOME OF THE AIRPORT GEOGRAPHIC LAYOUT AND WHAT THE HILL WAS LIKE THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS PUSHED INTO AND DOWN. THE HILL IS STEEP AND ALWAYS SLIPPERY WET OR DRY. FOUND THAT AIRCRAFT HAD MORE DAMAGE THAN WHAT WAS PREVIOUSLY ANTICIPATED. SUSPECT AT THIS TIME THAT THIS INCIDENT WILL BE UPGRADED TO AN ACCIDENT.

7/20/17 - TRAVELED OUT TO FRIDAY HARBOR TO VERIFY RECORDS, INSPECT THE AIRCRAFT, AND LOOK AT THE AREA OF THE ACCIDENT. FOUND RECORDS WERE IN ORDER. AIRCRAFT DAMAGE MATCHES WHAT THE AIRPORT MANAGER AND PILOT BOTH EXPLAINED. AIRCRAFT HAS STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT WING FROM THE TIP INTO APPROXIMATELY 3 FOOT OF THE WING SPAR. RIGHT LANDING GEAR IS BENT. ALL FROM THE GUST OF WIND THAT CAUGHT THE AIRCRAFT AND PUSHED IT TO THE GRASS SLOPE AT THE END OF THE ROLLOUT. UPON RETURN I NOTIFIED NTSB OF MY FINDINGS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA426](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA426), Jul 11, 2017: Cessna 170 (N2714D), Friday Harbor, WA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s loss of directional control during landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
