## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT AND THREE PASSENGERS DEPARTED JOPLIN (KJLN) AT 18:06 CENTRAL TIME. CLIMBED TO 12500. ABOUT 10 MIN. AFTER OBTAINING 12500, PILOT NOTICED A CHANGE IN THE ENGINES SOUND AND SUBSEQUENTLY FELT THE ENGINE SHAKE. PILOT CONTACTED FORT WORTH CENTER, WHO DIRECTED THE PILOT TO TAHLEQUAH (KTQH). THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN ROUGHER ACCOMPANIED BY SEVERAL LOUD KNOCKS WITH OIL BEGINNING TO COVER THE WINDSCREEN AND SMOKE FILLING THE COCKPIT. THE PILOT NOTICED A LARGE FIELD TO THE SOUTH OF THE RUNWAY AND TOUCHED DOWN THERE. THE EMERGENCY LANDING RESULTED IN THE NOSE GEAR COLLAPSING AND AIRCRAFT STRIKING A ROUND BAIL OF HAY THAT SEPARATED THE RIGHT RING FROM THE FUSELAGE. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST APPROXIMATELY 150 FEET FROM THE SOUTH END OF THE TAHLEQUAH AIRPORT RUNWAY. INSPECTION OF THE POWERPLANT REVEALED A LARGE AREA OF THE TOP OF THE CRANKCASE MISSING ON THE FORWARD END, WITH THE NUMBER 1 ROD JOURNAL BADLY GAULDED AND NUMBER 2 ROD DAMAGED AND DISCONNECTED FROM CRANK WITH ROD CAP MISSING. THE NUMBEWR 1 ROD WAS NOT VISIBLE. A LARGE AREA OF OIL WAS PRESENT ON THE GROUND WHERE THE AIRCRAFT INITIALLY CONTACTED THE GROUND AND NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN17LA292](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN17LA292), Jul 30, 2017: Piper PA 46 350P (N786MD), Tahlequah, OK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The total loss of engine power, which resulted from fatigue failure of two engine through bolts and the No. 2 cylinder attachment studs due to the lack of sufficient clamping force.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
