## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THIS ACCIDENT OCCURRED DURING A FLIGHT TRAINING EVENT. THE FIRST PILOT (PIC SEATED IN THE BACK SEAT) WAS EXERCISING THE PRIVILEGES OF HIS FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATE BY GIVING A FLIGHT REVIEW TO THE SECOND PILOT (TRAINEE IN THE FRONT SEAT) WHO WAS AN ATP BUT DID NOT HAVE A CURRENT FLIGHT REVIEW. THE FLYING PILOT TRAINEE HAD MADE SEVEN UNEVENTFUL LANDINGS IN THE HOUR FLIGHT THEN ON THE EIGHTH LANDING HE LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND CAUSED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT TAIL, LEFT WING, AND BOOT COWL/FIREWALL. THE DAMAGE OCCURRED WHEN THE FLYING PILOT TRAINEE APPLIED THE HEEL BRAKES IN AN OVERLY AGGRESSIVE FASHION, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO TIP UP ON THE NOSE (STRIKING THE PROPELLER ON THE GROUND) AND THEN RELEASING THE BREAKS AND ALLOWING THE AIRCRAFT TAIL TO FALL BACK AND IMPACT THE GROUND WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO CAUSE SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA17CA471](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA17CA471), Aug 5, 2017: Champion 7ACA (N1227G), Nampa, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll and the flight instructor’s use of excessive braking, which led to a nose-over.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
