## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE STUDENT PILOT DEPARTED ON A NIGHT FLIGHT WITH TWO PASSENGERS. THE REAR SEATED PASSENGER WAS THE ONLY PERSON HAVING A RECOLECTON OF THE ACCIDENT. SHE STATED THAT THE PILOT BRIEFED THE TWO PASSENGERS THAT HE WAS PREPARING TO LAND AND PUT IN FLAPS. SHE COULD SEE THE FLAPS BEING DEPLOYED OUT THE WINDOW. AFTERWARDS, THE PILOT STATED THAT HE WOULD NEED TO DO A 360 TURN BEFORE LANDING. THE PASSENGER THEN SAID SHE SAW A RED BLINKING LIGHT, POWER LINES, AND TOPS OF TREES. THE PILOT STATED THAT THEY NEEDED TO GO UP. AS SHE SAW THE FLAPS MOVE AGAIN, THE PILOT STATED, "GUYS THIS IS NOT GOOD". THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND A HALF MILE FROM THE APPROACH END OF RUNWAY 25 AT SKY MANOR AIRPORT (N40). THE AIRCRAFT TRAVELED FORTY YARDS AND CAME TO REST AFTER CONTACTING A SPLIT RAIL FENCE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

Probable cause: The student pilot's improper decision to conduct a night flight and his failure to maintain adequate altitude during the approach, which resulted in controlled flight into trees and terrain.…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong.
