## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON SEPTEMBER 15, 2017, AT 1312 EST, A STARDUSTER SA-100 EXPERIMENTAL BIPLANE, N1356W, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS ENROUTE FROM CHESTER AIRPORT (KSMC),CHESTER, CT, TO WARWICK AIRPORT (N72), WARWICK, NY, IN VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS. DUE TO SMOKE, A PRECAUTIONARY OFF AIRPORT EMERGENCY LANDING WAS MADE IN A MARSHY FIELD, WITH HIGH GRASS, WHICH RESULTED IN THE AIRCRAFT CARTWHEELING. THE PILOT WAS NOT INJURED.

THE PILOT STATED THAT THE ENGINE BEGAN TO SMOKE AN HOUR INTO THE FLIGHT. WORRIED ABOUT THE FABRIC COVERED, WOODEN FRAMED AIRCRAFT CATCHING FIRE, THE DECISION TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING IN A FIELD WAS MADE.

THE AIRCRAFT SUFFERED DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE, ELEVATOR, RUDDER, AND BOTH WINGS.

AFTER INSPECTION, THE SMOKE WAS DETERMINED TO BE CAUSED BY A LOOSE OIL LINE LEAKING OIL ONTO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD.

THIS REPORT WAS AMMENDED TO CORRECT THE NAME OF THE TOWN IN WHICH THE ACCIDENT TOOK PLACE, AS WELL AS THE GPS COORDINATES DEFINING IT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA17LA338](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA17LA338), Sep 15, 2017: Parks Richard A Starduster SA 100 (N1356W), Southfields, NY, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loose oil line that allowed oil to drip on the exhaust system, which resulted in smoke during cruise flight and a subsequent precautionary landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
