## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE STUDENT PILOT WAS RETURNING FROM A SOLO CROSS COUNTRY TO KMIV. HE STATED THE WINDS WERE REPORTED CALM ON AWOS. UPON LANDING ON RUNWAY 24, HE FELT ALL THREE WHEELS TOUCH DOWN, BUT THE AIRCRAFT WAS POINTED TO THE LEFT. A CORRECTION WAS NOT MADE IN TIME AND THE AIRCRAFT WENT OFF THE SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE LEFT WING HIT A TREE, AND SWUNG THE AIRCRAFT 180 DEGREES, SHEARING THE NOSE GEAR OFF THE AIRCRAFT, DAMAGING THE NOSE AND WING. THE PILOT WAS UNINJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA024](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA024), Oct 17, 2017: Cessna 172 (N6384D), Old Bridge, NJ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
