## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE AIRMAN WAS COMPLETING A LOCAL FLIGHT; DURING THE TERMINAL PHASE OF FLIGHT; THE AIRMAN RECEIVED THE LATEST WEATHER VIA THE AUTOMATIC TERMINAL INFORMATION SERVICE (ATIS) (INFORMATION ECHO 1953 UCT CALM WINDS VISIBILITY 10 MILES, CLEAR SKIES, TEMPERATURE 23° CELSIUS, DEW POINT 9° CELSIUS, ALTIMETER 30.28). HE THEN CONTACTED THE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER WHICH INSTRUCTED HIM TO LAND ON RUNWAY 08 AT SALINAS AIRPORT. DURING THE LANDING PHASE THE AIRCRAFT DEPARTED THE RUNWAY TO THE RIGHT STRIKING AN AIRPORT SIGN. THIS CAUSED THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR TO COLLAPSE. THIS CAUSED THE LEFT MAIN WING TO STRIKE THE RUNWAY PAVEMENT. ALSO DAMAGED DURING THE COLLISION WITH THE AIRPORT SIGN WAS THE AIRCRAFT PROPELLER. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A REST ADJACENT TO THE RUNWAY EDGE NEAR TAXIWAY DELTA. AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT THE WEATHER WAS REPORT BY THE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER (2040 UCT WINDS 280° AT 5 KNOTS, 10 MILES VISIBILITY, CLEAR SKIES, TEMPERATURE 24° CELSIUS, DEW POINT 11° CELSIUS, ALTIMETER 30.27)

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA018](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA018), Oct 22, 2017: Aeronca 7DC (N83512), Salinas, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during landing with a tailwind.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
