## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2017 AT APPROXIMATELY 1755 PST, A PIPER PA-28R SINGLE ENGINE AIRPLANE, ON AN IFR PLEASURE FLIGHT FROM NORTH LAS VEGAS, NEVADA TO LAVERNE, CALIFORNIA, UNDER CFR PART 91, SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AFTER EXPERIENCING AN ENGINE FAILURE AND CONDUCTING AN EMERGENCY LANDING ADJACENT TO U.S. INTERSTATE I-15 NEAR YUCCA GROVE, CALIFORNIA.

THE PILOT AND SOLE PASSENGER WERE UNINJURED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY ON THE GROUND.

THE PILOT INITIALLY REPORTED HAVING DIFFICULTY MAINTAINING ALTITUDE DUE TO A ROUGH RUNNING ENGINE AND A HIGH CYLINDER TEMPERATURE. THE CONDITION QUICKLY DETERIORATED TO THE POINT THAT THE PILOT HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING SEVERAL MILES FROM ANY AIRPORT. THE AIRCRAFT APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN DAMAGED FROM UNIMPROVED TERRAIN ADJACENT TO THE FREEWAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR18LA033](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR18LA033), Nov 17, 2017: Piper PA 28R-201T (N5966V), Nipton, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power due to the detonation of the No. 5 cylinder due to excessive leaning at high power settings, which resulted in a forced landing and the subsequent hard touchdown.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
