## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE ON A SHORT FINAL APPROACH TO A LANDING AREA, THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO ENTER INTO A HOVER WHILE OUT OF GROUND EFFECT. DUE TO GUSTY WINDS AND BEING OUT OF GROUND EFFECT, THE PILOT LOST CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT WHICH CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO STRIKE THE GROUND. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA060](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA060), Nov 22, 2017: Hughes 300 (N9685F), Woodlawn, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s inappropriate descent profile during landing with a quartering gusting tailwind, which resulted in a loss of main rotor rpm.

## Other reports on N9685F (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19760105000349A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19760105000349A), Jan 5, 1976: Hughes 269C (N9685F), Saginaw, MI, Substantial damage

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
