## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ASEL M-20 MOONEY ACCIDENT:

DURING A FLIGHT WITHIN THE TRAFFIC PATTERN OF RYAN AIRFIELD (RYN) NEAR TUCSON, AZ., THE AIRMAN EXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF ENGINE POWER IN THE CROSSWIND TURN. THE AIRMAN DID NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT ALTITUDE TO RETURN TO LAND ON THE AIRPORT SO HE MANEUVERED THE AIRCRAFT FOR AN OFF AIRPORT LANDING WHILE HE INITIATED AN EMERGENCY CHECKLIST. THIS CHECKLIST INCLUDED SWITCHING FUEL TANKS. WHEN THE AIRMAN SWITCHED TANKS, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO OPERATE NORMALLY, BUT THE ALTITUDE WAS TOO LOW AND THE AIRMAN DID NOT HAVE THE TIME TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM.

LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT WAS CALLED TO THE SCENE OF THE OFF AIRPORT LANDING.

THE AIRMAN WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT AND HE DID NOT SUSTAIN ANY INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT, HOWEVER, SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA059](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA059), Nov 26, 2017: Mooney M20 (N6002Q), Tucson, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s inadequate preflight and in-flight fuel management, which resulted in an intermittent loss of engine power due to fuel starvation.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
