## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON NOVEMBER 29, 2017 THE PILOT STATED THAT HE WAS ON A SOLO CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT FROM KMTN (MARTIN STATE) TO KMRB (MARTINSBURG). WHILE ENROUTE HE EXPERIENCED AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE OF THE GPS AND COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS. AT THIS TIME THE PILOT DECIDED TO MAKE A PRECAUTIONARY LANDING. CLEARVIEW AIRPARK (2W2) WAS IN SIGHT AND WAS CHOSEN AS THE ALTERNATIVE AIRPORT. DURING FINAL APPROACH THE PILOT LOWERED THE LANDING GEAR HANDLE BUT WAS UNABLE TO VERIFY THAT THE LANDING GEAR WAS DOWN. THE PILOT'S GLIDEPATH WAS NOT SUFFICIENT TO REACH THE END OF THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD OR END OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT (N690RU) STRUCK THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 60 FEET FROM THE END OF THE PAVED RUNWAY 32 AT 2W2. THE AIRCRAFT THEN SLID TO A STOP APPROXIMATELY 2 FEET FROM THE RUNWAY. THE INITIAL IMPACT WAS ABOUT 325 FEET FROM THE END OF THE DISPLACED THRESHOLD. UPON ARRIVAL THE IIC DETERMINED THERE TO BE SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE, WINGS AND HORIZONTAL STABILIZER. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WAS TURNED ON BY THE IIC, BUT FAILED WITHIN TEN SECONDS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA18LA034](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA18LA034), Nov 29, 2017: Aero Commander 112 (N690RU), Westminister, MD, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain a proper glidepath during the approach due to his distraction by the failure of an avionics panel, which resulted in a runway undershoot.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
