## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 01/13/2018, 1630 PST, N4163B, EXPERIMENTAL AMATEUR BUILT VANS RV-7A, PILOTED BY THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ PRIVATE PILOT, ON A 14 CFR 91 FLIGHT LANDED AT DEATH VALLEY FURNACE CREEK AIRPORT (L06).

THE PILOT MADE A HARD LANDING CAUSING THE NOSE GEAR TO COLLAPSE AND THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED OVER UPSIDE DOWN. THE PILOT AND THE ONE PASSENGER WERE ABLE TO EXIT THE AIRCRAFT SUFFERING ONLY VERY MINOR CUTS AND BRUISES. DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT WAS SUBSTANTIAL INVOLVING THE LANDING GEAR, ENGINE COWLING, ENGINE, PROPELLOR, SPINNER, CANOPY AND VERTICAL STABILIZER.

DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK RANGERS RESPONDED AND NOTIFIED THE NTSB AND FAA.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB GAA18CA103](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/GAA18CA103), Jan 14, 2018: Harrop Blake RV 7 (N4163B), Death Valley National Park, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain adequate airspeed and his exceedance of the airplane’s critical angle of attack during the landing flare, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
